Romania’s pensions will be indexed in 2027 under the legal formula, Labour Minister Florin Manole said in a statement on Antena 3 CNN on Saturday evening. “Pensions will be indexed, they will be increased next year,” Manole said, ruling out a pension freeze.

Preliminary numbers

A preliminary simulation puts the 2027 pension indexation increase at 7.3 percent, though Manole stressed the figures are not final. The estimated budgetary impact of the increase is 9.6 billion lei. He said he will submit the indexation proposal to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance based on the legal formula.

Separately, he outlined December support payments for pensioners: 500 lei for those with incomes up to 1,500 lei, 400 lei for pensions between 1,501 and 2,000 lei, and 300 lei for pensions between 2,001 and 3,000 lei. This aid equals half of the amounts set at the start of the year and is paid together with the pension according to monthly income.

Wages and timetable

On the minimum wage, Manole said any decision will be taken within the National Tripartite Council, with discussions scheduled for November. A possible increase to 600 lei gross has circulated publicly, but the minister did not confirm it. Under the government programme, the minimum wage is indexed at 12-month intervals, meaning the earliest theoretical date for a new rise would be 1 January 2027.

Negotiations on the unitary salary law are due to resume in early 2027, after public institutions complete centralisation of salary data. Manole said the new formula will not cause salary cuts, particularly in health and education.
