The US Treasury on Wednesday imposed fresh sanctions on companies and individuals based in India and Turkey over their ties to Iran. The measures were taken under a campaign the Trump administration has described as aimed at cutting off Iran’s ability to sell oil to fund its war with the United States.

Network targeted

Treasury said the network is run by India-based Suniel Kumar Sharma and his wife, Jaspreet Preeti Shahid. Nine entities connected to Sharma were targeted, Treasury said.

Two other Indian citizens head two of the couple’s businesses, according to the department. Fugo Group Services Inc was also sanctioned for what Treasury described as ongoing support of Iran’s heavily sanctioned aviation sector.

Treasury’s account

The department said the network’s schemes had provided false flags and certifications to sanctioned vessels. Those vessels were involved in transporting Iranian petroleum, Treasury said, including ships operating on behalf of the Iranian military and its proxies.

Treasury said the previous week its actions were decimating Iran’s economy, driving the rial to new lows and pushing inflation to around 90 percent.
