China’s industrial production rose 5.5% year on year in September 2026, the data showed. The reading came in above the market forecast of 5.4%, and it was higher than the 5.2% recorded in the previous period.
What the figure measures
Industrial production tracks the output of factories, mines and utilities, so it gives a rough picture of how much the country’s industrial sector produced over the period. A year-on-year rate compares output in September with output in the same month a year earlier, which strips out the usual seasonal swings and shows whether production is growing or shrinking over the twelve months. A higher figure means industry produced more than it did a year before.
Against the forecast, the result was 0.1 percentage points stronger. Against the previous period, the rate was 0.3 percentage points higher, so the pace of growth picked up.
