Binance said on Thursday it was investigating reports of a potential security issue. Its founder said the incident “does look like a hack on Binance”, though the exchange had not explicitly confirmed that funds had been taken.
A Binance spokesperson said user funds were safe. The extent of any possible damage was not immediately clear, and the company said it would provide updates through official channels once information was verified.
Stablecoin issuers act
Stablecoin issuers moved quickly. Tether said it had frozen the equivalent of more than $1.5 billion in currency related to a potential Binance exchange hack, according to chief executive Paolo Ardoino.
Co-founder and chief executive Jeremy Allaire said the freeze was carried out in coordination with law enforcement.
