Sterling held at $1.3542 as speculators cut back their net short position in the currency. Data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission showed 44,524 contracts net short in the week to 25 August, down 10,049 contracts from 54,573 the week before.
What the positioning shows
A net short position means more speculative contracts are placed on the pound falling than on it rising. The 10,049-contract move is the size of that shift in a single reporting week.
The CFTC figures carry the date 25 August. They describe positioning in that week, not in the session where the pound traded at $1.3542.
