German investor sentiment weakened in October, according to the ZEW Economic Sentiment Index, which was released in Germany on 20 October 2026 at 09:00 GMT. The index stood at 28.1 for the reference period of October 2026. Economists had expected a reading of 30, so the figure came in below forecast.

Compared with the previous period

The reading also fell from the previous period, when the index stood at 34.7. The index is built from the views of financial analysts and institutional investors on where the economy is heading over the coming months, so a lower reading means fewer of them expect improvement. Compared with the previous period, the drop was 6.6 points, and that move, more than the gap to forecast, is the clearer signal in the data.

What the index measures

The ZEW index is a survey-based gauge rather than a measure of current output. It captures expectations, not activity, which is why it is watched closely by markets and policymakers as an early indicator. A reading above zero generally signals that more respondents are optimistic than pessimistic, while the level of 28.1 remains positive but lower than in the previous period.
