Preliminary building permits in the United States came in at 1.4 for September 2026, the data showed. The reading was above the market forecast of 1.39. It was, however, lower than the previous period’s 1.403, so the figure is both a small beat against expectations and a slight step back from the prior reading.
What the figure measures
Building permits track the number of authorisations issued for new residential construction, so they offer an early signal of future housing activity. A reading of 1.4 is a preliminary estimate that may later be revised. Because permits come before actual construction starts, the series is often watched as a leading indicator for the building sector.
The gap between the reported value and the forecast was small. Against the previous period, the decline was also slight, measured in the same units. Neither comparison on its own gives a full picture of the trend.
