MSCI sentiment weighs

Erwin Gunawan Hutapea, Head of Monetary Management and Securities Asset Department at Bank Indonesia, said pressure on the rupiah can still be managed, although the exchange rate had weakened beyond Rp18,000 per US dollar. He said the market is gradually digesting the impact of the MSCI sentiment, so pressure on the exchange rate is expected to ease.

The weakening came even as the US dollar index slipped. The index stood at 101,636 at 09:00 WIB, down 0.17 percent.

Oil and geopolitical backdrop

Oil prices had surged sharply the previous week on rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Markets were also awaiting US data releases and a Federal Reserve rate decision during the week.
