Romania’s trade deficit reached 22.4 billion euro in the first eight months of 2026, up 307.2 million euro, or 1.4 percent, from the same period of 2025, according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). Exports on a free-on-board basis rose 4 percent to 65.8 billion euro, while imports on a cost-insurance-freight basis rose 3.4 percent to 88.2 billion euro.
In August alone the gap was 3.14 billion euro. Exports reached 7.5 billion euro and imports 10.6 billion euro, with export growth of 11.6 percent and import growth of 13.7 percent compared with August 2025, so imports outpaced exports that month.
Partners and product mix
The European Union remains the dominant counterparty. Exports to EU27 members totalled 47.1 billion euro, or 71.6 percent of all exports, while imports from the bloc reached 64 billion euro, or 72.5 percent of the total.
Trade with non-EU markets was less balanced. Exports to those destinations came to 18.6 billion euro and imports to 24.2 billion euro over the eight months.
Energy and food
Exports of the same category rose 13.9 percent to 4.25 billion euro.
Food and live animal exports grew 9.8 percent to 5.31 billion euro, while imports of the same goods fell 1.3 percent to 7.6 billion euro. Machinery and transport equipment still made up 45.5 percent of exports and 36.6 percent of imports.
