Texas attorney general and Republican candidate Ken Paxton said that diesel prices above $6 per gallon and the war with Iran under Donald Trump were weighing on his party’s campaign ahead of next month’s election.
Paxton links economy to war and fuel costs
Paxton made his remarks at a closed-door fundraising event, where he described affordability as the Republicans’ biggest problem going into the midterms. He attributed the issue less to tariffs and more to high gas and diesel prices, as well as the conflict with Iran. “When it’s over $6 per gallon for diesel … people are feeling the pinch,” he said.
He also acknowledged that many factors shaping the federal race were beyond his control and said he did not know the reasoning behind some decisions affecting the campaign.
Polling shows widespread economic concern
Polling cited from the Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research showed 74 percent of Americans said the economy was leaning poorly, while 65 percent blamed policies under Trump directly for higher costs.
The audio of Paxton’s remarks was among several clips leaked in recent days, highlighting his candid views on challenges facing Republicans in the race.
Campaign response emphasizes tax relief plans
Paxton’s campaign spokesperson called the leaked remarks a non-story and said the attorney general was stating what many Texans already recognize: gasoline and diesel prices are too high, affecting families at the pump and grocery stores. She added that President Trump is working to bring prices down and that Paxton aims to support families through measures like a bigger child tax credit and increased deductions for health care and home purchases.
The spokesperson also contrasted Paxton with his opponent, warning that James Talarico would raise taxes, and underscored the need for immediate relief for Texans.
