US stock indices closed mostly higher on Tuesday, as investors weighed corporate earnings reports and geopolitical developments. The Dow Jones rose 1.02 percent to 52,495.88 points. The S&P 500 gained 0.28 percent to 7,712.57 points, while the Nasdaq slipped 0.02 percent to 26,424.82 points.

Contents
  • Tech earnings in focus
  • Geopolitics stays in the background

By our market data, the Dow closed at 52,513.84 points on 20 October, up 1.05 percent, its highest in 31 days. The S&P 500 stood at 7,722.67 points that day, and the Nasdaq Composite at 26,489.89 points.

Tech earnings in focus

Ulrike Hoffmann-Buchardi of the UBS investment office said she expects a solid third-quarter earnings season for technology companies. She warned that high expectations may generate volatility in specific companies, Bloomberg reported.

The central question for investors is whether recent growth rates can be sustained as comparisons become more demanding.

Geopolitics stays in the background

Geopolitical developments also held investor attention during the session. The report did not specify which events drove the trading.
