Canada introduced retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion of United States goods on 8 September, executing a trade response unveiled late last month following earlier measures imposed by Washington.
Structure of the counter-tariffs
The Canadian countermeasures apply rates of 15, 25, or 50 percent to targeted items shipped across the border, responding directly to previous United States trade actions. Canada announced the tiers on 25 August.
Targeted products include apparel, cheese, metal parts, and wood products. The duties took effect on 8 September.
Origins of the dispute
The cross-border confrontation began on 21 July, when the United States administration announced a 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian goods, alleging discriminatory practices against American products. The tariff struck cross-border commerce immediately.
That United States action targeted approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian products, establishing the scale that Canadian authorities subsequently matched across the affected import lines. Bilateral trade face higher costs.
